Q: A New York Times author wrote that any attempt to make religion compatible with science is doomed to fail. I read that the German-born physicist Albert Einstein believed that science without religion was lame, and religion without science was blind. Some of my professors agree, while others say that science solves problems while religion only pontificates on them. What does the Bible say? – S.R.

A: In the aftermath of World War II, a leading pioneer of rocket and space technology said, “Science and religion are not antagonists. On the contrary, they’re sisters.” And he said, “Speaking for myself, I can only say that the grandeur of the cosmos served only to confirm a belief in the certainty of a creator. … In our search to know God, I’ve come to believe that the life of Jesus Christ should be the focus of our efforts and inspiration. The reality of His life and His resurrection is the hope of mankind.”

Take, for instance, the troubling subject of death. Science has not been able to solve this certainty. America’s Silicon Valley is considered one of the greatest scientific areas in the world, and yet all the scientific brains there cannot solve the problem of death. With all of our medical knowledge, we’ve not been able to advance average life expectancy to any significant degree.

Greater than religion, the Bible declares that death has already been defeated – and will stay defeated – by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He Himself testifies to this: “I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death” (Revelation 1:17–18, NASB).

This comes from the Creator of mankind who holds the human soul in His hand. Jesus declared, “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me … has passed from death into life” (John 5:24, NKJV).
