Where does it say that people are made in the image of God?

Q: People say that people are created in the image of God, but if that is true, I sure don’t want to be like God. When I say that, people think I’m being disrespectful of God, but I think I’m just being honest. There aren’t many people that remind me of what I think God might be. Where does it say that people are made in the image of God? – N.G.
A: You will never understand who you are until you understand who God is. The Bible clearly teaches that mankind was made in God’s own image (see Genesis 1:27). God had a purpose in making you. His primary purpose was that you would receive Him as Lord and Savior and follow Him through life on Earth. If people do not have fellowship with God, they are lost, confused, and bewildered.
But God also gave man a will. He doesn’t force anyone to receive Him. When man does not find his place in this world, he has a sense of not fitting. There are thousands of people who admit and confess that they are unhappy. Economics, security, recreation, pleasure, have not brought about the peace and happiness that they expected. The reason is that man was created in the image of God and cannot find complete rest and fulfillment until he belongs to Christ.
God created mankind with the ability to respond to moral choices. Faced with the moral option of living selfishly or unselfishly, people can and do make wrong decisions. We are free to choose, but we reap the consequences of bad moral decisions. One of the reasons for crime, perversion, and the evils of mankind is that we’ve lost belief in the certainty of God being just, holy, and righteous. And God will judge the world.
We will not know the fellowship of God until we receive Him as Lord and Savior through repentance of sin, receiving His forgiveness and eternal life with Him.
