FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots owner Robert Kraft put the ball in Christian Gonzalez’s court Saturday.

Kraft revealed Saturday on the first day of training camp that the Patriots have offered Gonzalez a contract extension that would both make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL and the highest-paid player in team history.

“We love Christian Gonzalez,” Kraft said during the team’s Pawtriots pet adoption event. “We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history. So we’re glad we drafted him and we developed here, and we hope he’ll be with us for a long time.”

Gonzalez is eligible for a contract extension for the first time this year after being selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie (four years, $131 million) is currently the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. Defensive tackle Milton Williams is the highest-paid player in team history with a four-year, $104 million deal. Wide receiver A.J. Brown currently leads the team with a $32 million APY.

Gonzalez is present for Patriots training camp after skipping most of the offseason workout program. He was a limited participant in mandatory minicamp. Head coach Mike Vrabel expects Gonzalez’s participation to increase during training camp, even without a contract agreement in place.

Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who shares an agent with Gonzalez and is also newly eligible for a contract extension, has also not signed a new deal this offseason.

Vrabel said the Patriots were not waiting on Witherspoon’s deal to get done before signing Gonzalez to his extension.

Gonzalez said last month that he hopes to be rewarded as a Patriot.
